Acne Management: Our Top Tips For Break Out Free Skin

If you suffer from regular skin breakouts or are living with active acne, dealing with your skin on the daily can be extremely frustrating.

Although it can feel like you're the only person on the planet without a clear complexion, acne is the most common skin condition in the world and in Australians, affects 85% of 15-24 year old's.

But waving your teenage years bye-bye doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll never get an acne break out again… ‘adult acne’ is a real issue and, due to hormonal influences, typically affects more women than men.

Although it’s understandable that having breakouts, oiliness, or acne can get you down, try not to stress.  Stress triggers your body to release cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone that at prolonged and elevated levels, can cause your skin’s sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

The good news is that there are actually many effective treatments that can help you manage and control your acne.   The main thing to note is that you may need to address the issue from multiple angles and come to terms with the fact that it will most likely need regular and consistent attention for best results.

Over the coming months we will be sharing a series of blogs that will discuss all you need to know about acne: the causes, the different types of acne and the various treatment options.  But for now, here are our top tips for break out free skin:

ASI Top Tips For Acne Skin:

#1 - Don’t Touch!

Try to keep fingers, hands and hair away from your face as this can introduce and/or spread bacteria.  Although it’s sometimes done subconsciously, do your best to not pick or fiddle with acne spots while sitting at your computer, study desk or while watching tv!

#2 - Change Your Pillow Slip Often!

Make sure to sleep on a clean pillow slip every night (sleep, flip, sleep, change).  You don’t want to lay your freshly cleansed skin on top of last night's pillow bacteria.

#3 - Leave The Squeezing To The Professionals.

It’s tempting but... do not squeeze your own pimples! Doing this incorrectly can lead to further breakouts and scarring.  Instead you can spot treat with ASIs Clearing Renewal Complex, a potent cosmeceutical featuring Chlorhexidine to fight and kill bacteria, Magnesium Sulfate to draw out impurities and healing vitamin B3 to soothe inflammation and prevent further break out

#4 - Get A Good Night's Rest.

Did you know that your skin actually repairs itself while you sleep?  Growth hormones are stimulated while you sleep, repairing damaged skin cells and promoting fresh new cells to grow.  Keeping yourself warm and cosy will increase blood circulation to your skin, clearing away waste products and bringing beneficial nutrients and hydration to the deeper layers of your skin.

#5 - Go ‘au naturel’

Don't clog your skin with heavy make-up.  Use mineral-based, preservative-free cosmetics like our ASI Mineral Radiance Range instead.  Besides being free of potentially irritating chemicals, fragrances and preservatives, mineral make-up is also oil, wax and talc free, giving you a clean, buildable coverage with natural SPF sun protection.

#6 - Don’t Stress.

Relax, stay calm and stress-free.  High cortisol levels will actually cause your skin to produce more sebum, clogging pores and suffocating the skin of oxygen… exactly the kind of environment acne bacteria loves!

#7 - Eat Less Saturated Fat And More EFAs.

Getting plenty of EFA’s from foods like fish, nuts and avocados (to name a few),  into your diet will actually help your skin produce a thinner, more flowy oil that won’t clog your pores.

#8 - No Scrubs!

Don't use scrub exfoliants... opt for brush-on exfoliator like the ASI AHA Power Exfoliant instead.  The p-bacteria that causes acne loves an oily, airless environment… removing dead skin build up and encouraging oxygenation of the skin is a surefire way to prevent this bacteria from proliferating.  Our power exfoliant uses naturally active Glycolic and Lactic Acid with calming Chamomile to encourage healthy skin formation without irritating acne skin.
