Night Shift - Do you really need a separate day and night cream?

A question that we often get asked is; “Do I need two different moisturisers for day and night’?  It’s a simple enough question and I totally get why it’s asked.  I mean, is it a world-wide conspiracy amongst skincare companies trying to get us buying an extra cream we don’t really need or do each actually perform a different function?

Well, the short answer is “OMG… my daahlink… YAS… you  need two!”;  but the long answer is this, and it will help you understand why:

Our skin works differently at night.  When the ticking hand of our body’s circadian rhythm (our internal body clock)  strikes ‘sleepy time’ our skin is signaled into ‘repair mode’.  It switches from it’s day time ‘protect mode’ and begins work on recovering and repairing any damage and stress accumulated during the day.  Melatonin and HGH (Human Growth Hormone) production increases and your skin’s regeneration process speeds up.

While you are sleeping, blood flow in the skin increases, causing temperature to rise and making your skin more permeable and receptive to the anti-ageing ingredients in your skincare.  Moisturisers and serums that include potent cosmeceuticals such as Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C, Vitamin B3 and Hyaluronic Acid support the skin with the perfect building blocks needed for recovery and supply the skin with the moisture and lipids it needs to stay hydrated and protected; so it’s logical to include these in a night time treatment when they will be most beneficial.

Some of these cosmeceuticals, especially Vitamin A do not fare well in the sun.  Vitamin A is an amazing and potent anti-aging powerhouse (read all about it’s benefits here)... but put it in the sun and you will actually magnify potential sun damage and sensitivity so having this in a day time moisturiser is a big no-no!

On the flip-side, there is absolutely no point in using a day time moisturiser that contains sunscreen at night, especially if it is a ‘chemical’ based sunscreen, containing commonly used ingredients such as oxybenzone; on which studies have shown it to cause hormone disruption, like lowering testosterone levels in the body… yikes!  So while these same studies have also shown that you would probably need to use these sunscreens for about 227 years straight to get these hormone changing effects…. Well, let's just not add fuel to the fire by including it in our night time skincare routine, shall we?

Anyway… are you starting to get the drift?  While, once upon a time, using the one simple skin cream morning and night may have been acceptable but probably did nothing much in supporting the skin on a cellular level; advances in technology and the use of potent cosmeceutical ingredients in today’s skincare means that you must use the right product at the right time.  So, “OMG… my daahlink… YAS!”  you definitely need a night cream.
